History of Lapland.

Starting from the recorded history perspective, there are some museums throughout Lapland.  The museums vary considerably in the material that they cover a large number of items on display.  There are some eleven museums, or heritage listed buildings in Lapland, not including the many indigenous Sami people cultural centers that also display a lot of information and craft items on the cultural history of Lapland.

The above list of Museums may not be open at all seasons, some of them are only seasonal, with specific dates and months for visits.  Check the particular timetables for opening seasons.  Here is more information on one location, from the above list.  Salla Museum has very broad coverage of the local municipality. It also covers a lot of areas from the war it experienced in 1939-45.  The entire township of the former Salla municipality had to be relocated some 50 kilometers west, due to the annexation by the Soviet army forces, the former Salla municipality is still occupied by the Russian today.  This is why the museum the history of Salla is so entrenched in the bitter upheavals that civilians may experience during an army invasion.

Salla´s Museum of War and Reconstruction

The Salla Museum´s exhibition tells with stories, artifacts, pictures, and real items about the history of Salla municipality which was known as Kola lake (Kuolajärvi) until the year 1936.  The museum also has a cozy coffee shop with a small food stall. They sell books, craft items, and sweets. The municipality of Kola Lake was renamed and called Salla in 1936.   It located at the railway station, the large wooden building was built in 1948, it was initially created for the purpose of accommodation for the railway workers and families.
